Why is Rourkela called the Steel City?
Rourkela is proudly called the “Steel City” because it is home to the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), established in 1955 as India’s very first integrated public sector steel plant post-independence. Built under a historic collaboration with West German industrial giants, this monumental project pioneered the advanced LD (Linz-Donawitz) steelmaking process in Asia and became the first in India to produce vital silicon steel sheets. The city itself was meticulously planned and built from scratch around this industrial powerhouse, transforming a quiet, forested region into a bustling, multicultural hub. Today, managed by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Rourkela earned its iconic moniker because its high-quality steel plates and coils literally built the infrastructure, defense systems, and industrial backbone of a self-reliant nation.
